Hi from the farm!
This week we want to talk about our amazing Apprentices as we will be sending them off to a farming conference later this week...
Our Apprenticeship Program trains new farmers in the art of organic agriculture over a season-long, hands-on work experience. We have developed an intensive Apprenticeship Program Curriculum that covers more than 20 key topics ranging from soil science to whole farm planning, each of which is integral to understanding a small, diversified farm operation. Season after season, our energetic and driven crew is the lifeblood of daily life at the farm, and it has been exciting and rewarding for us to act as mentors to the next generation of American farmers. We believe that these beginning farmers are the most important crop we grow at our farm.
The second week of August is always a big week for our Apprentices - it's the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York's Annual Summer Conference! We'll be sending our Apprentices off on Friday morning for a weekend of agricultural education with farmers from all over the Northeast. We know they'll bring back a ton of new tips and tricks to help us finish out the 2017 season strong!
Now, for this week's box....
- Poblano Peppers (new!)
- Jalapeno Peppers
- Purslane (new!)
- Purslane is a wild edible that voluntarily grows throughout our fields and is both delicious and nutritious! It is high in vitamin E and an essential omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Purslane provides six times more vitamin E than spinach and seven times more beta carotene than carrots! It’s also rich in vitamin C, magnesium, riboflavin, potassium and phosphorus. It is crunchy with a slight lemony taste - great is salads or on a sandwich. Throw it in a blender with olive oil and garlic to try making a pesto with it :)
- White Onion
- Tomatillos (new!)
In the fields for picking:
- Cherry Tomatoes
- Shishitos (new!)
- Lunchbox Peppers
This week's rotating bread share:
- Salty Soured Pickled Rye
This week's rotating cheese share:
- Catapano's Goat Chevre
This week's fruit share:
- Blackberries & Plums & Peaches
