Hi from the farm!
This week, we are swimming in tomatoes! It's the season for sauce and we have tomato "seconds" available for CSA members during pick-up. "Seconds" have small bruises or wounds and therefore can't be sold, but are still perfect for eating and cooking. U-Pick Cherry Tomatoes are filled with ripe fruit right now, and while Sungolds are in the box this week, we encourage you to pick more and make Sungold Tomato Sauce > It's incredible (recipe below!).
With only one week left in our Summer Share, it is time to stock up on our U-Pick crops and think about preserving this year's harvest. We have just the workshop for you! Learn how to preserve the summer bounty of delicious tastes and beautiful colors with the lady farmers at Amber Waves! We’ll discuss our favorite tips, techniques & recipes that help us survive through the long winter.
We’ll learn the basics of preservation through dehydrating, pickling, freezing and boozing! We will be drying flowers and herbs, pickling jalapeños, and infusing vodka with fruit. We'll also talk about blanching, freezing, and oil infusing. Each participant will take a few of these items to start stocking their winter pantry along with a packet of information to replicate our recipes at home. At the end of the workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to head into the field with one of the Amber Waves's farmers to harvest some tomatoes, peppers and tomatillos to continue practicing preserving at home.
