Happy Fourth of July!
It finally feels like summer at the farm, and the fields are almost entirely full of food! Here are some updates from the fields:
Over the past few years, we’ve been working on nailing down our succession plantings: multiple rounds of the same crop, so that when we reach the end of one planting, the next one is ready for harvesting. This is especially important for crops that you only get one harvest from. Right now, we have several rounds of lettuce, cabbage, kohlrabi, fennel, and celery in addition to kale, summer squash and tomatoes. We’re working hard to have these vegetables available consistently throughout the summer (with the exception of tomatoes as they require a bit more time and care!). Most of this food is grown on our second field, located on Town Lane behind the Balsam Farms farmstand. Also on Town Lane are our peppers, broccoli and brussel sprouts.
July has brought the heat that has been slow to arrive on the East End. And, with the fields full, it is time to focus on getting everything watered. You’ll see the tubing of our irrigation system throughout the fields in the coming days.
This month also brings one of our favorite times of year: the garlic harvest! The first full size garlic is making an appearance in your box this week, and is sure to be a regular staple throughout the summer.
This week's box includes:
- Napa Cabbage
Optional: Garlic Scapes
In the fields to pick:
- Herb Garden
- Snap Peas
- Some Early Flowers
This week's rotating bread share:
Honey Oat Loaf
This week's fruit share:
Raspberries and Blueberries
This week's rotating cheese share:
Catapano Goat Herb Chevre
Cucumber Parsley Salad (Do you get the rotating cheese share? Try throwing some of that herb chevre into this summer salad!)
*Holiday Tip: This box is packed with vegetables perfect for the grill at your Fourth of July BBQ. Slice and toss the zucchini, kohlrabi, napa cabbage and garlic scapes with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and throw on the grill for the perfect summer side dish.
