This week we’d love to introduce you to our fantastic 2017 farm crew. This year’s team is made up of three returning farmers who have spent several seasons with us, five new apprentices, a new crew leader, and a few part time staff members. Having spent the first three seasons of our time at Amber Waves Farm working in the fields solo (just Amanda and Katie), we are extremely grateful to now have a crew of more than a dozen intelligent, motivated, positive people that help us get more done in a day than we could have imagined nearly ten years ago.
Most of our new crew members join us through our Apprenticeship Program, in which they commit to working with us for a full season (about 9 months) and become fully immersed in every aspect of our farming operation. They join us from all over the country either right out of college, after a couple years in the working world, or following apprenticeships on other farms. Katie and I are the product of an Apprenticeship Program at Quail Hill Farm around the corner, and we take seriously the responsibility of paying that opportunity forward to other young people. We are aiming to influence our country’s food system by sending the people who complete our farm’s program on to careers in education, food policy, academia, or on their own future farms with a knowledge base of how to sustainably grow food and participate in their communities. It’s also our hope that at least a few new apprentices stay with us each season and climb the ranks of the Amber Waves team to take on management positions that help the farm flourish while also building their own skillsets. Visit our Meet the Farmers page to see who’s on our team this season!
